Japan’s and Australia’s presidents inked a “landmark” defense deal that allows for deeper military cooperation and is a retort to China’s rising aggressiveness in the Indo-Pacific area. The Reciprocal Access Agreement was signed by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at a virtual summit, marking Japan’s first such defense deal with a country other than the United States. The agreement comes after more than a year of discussions between Japan and Australia aimed at removing legal impediments to allow troops from one nation to train in the other’s country.
